OK to go carless?

Hello...we%26#39;ll be flying in for Virginia for a week%26#39;s stay in June. It looks like Charleston is pretty pedestrian friendly, from what we%26#39;ve read online, so we%26#39;d rather not rent a car if we don%26#39;t have to, especially since our hotel is in the historic district. Please let me know if this is a good or bad idea! Thanks!

You can definitely stay here without a car. If you want to go to the plantations, there is always the option of taking a tour. By the time you pay for gas, parking in the city, and the car rental itself for a week, two people can probably pay for 4 or more ';escorted'; tours.

We do have a very decent public bus system that can not only take you to the beach areas but to shopping and other sites. It%26#39;s called Carta and there is a schedule online. There is a great tourist shuttle that has a hop-on-hop-off policy, too. (open air, kind of looks like the New Orleans street cars)

You can get from Charleston to Mt. Pleasant (you%26#39;ve probably read about it) by water taxi, too (leaves from the same area as the Harbor/Ft. Sumter cruise). If you%26#39;re into walking, one of the best things to do is to walk the bridge to Mt. Pleasant (and either walk back or water taxi back)

Since you%26#39;ll be here in June, you really should plan on at least one beach day. Since you%26#39;re in the lowcountry, be sure to check the tide table before planning your beach day for maximum ';beachage';.(new word).

ENJOY!

Thanks very much for the in depth response! This helps a lot. ';Beachage.'; That%26#39;s great...

While I%26#39;ve got your knowledgeable ear, what%26#39;s the weather typically like at the end of June there? I would reckon it%26#39;d be a lot like here, here being central Virginny, hot %26amp; sticky. Mosquitoes? Thunderstorms? Hurricanes??

As you know, the weather can change quickly. In the summer we can have a pop-up shower in the afternoon that may just last a few minutes. Hurricanes would be rare that time of the year. They usually come in late August or September. The weather will be warm so dress loose, light and cool. Wear sunscreen and maybe a sun hat and shades. Drink plenty of water.

I agree with CultureHound that you do not need a car if you are staying in the historical district and you can always book a tour to the plantations. Wear comfortable flats for walking.
