Planning a one-day visit

Staying in Charleston in June and would like to take a day trip to Beaufort. Can anyone tell me the best route to take, where to head for once we get to Beaufort and some ';must see'; places? We enjoy the waterfront, historic buildings, wandering around, etc.

Also a restaurant recommendation for lunch would be great. Thanks.

Here is a thread from the Beaufort forum that you might find very helpful:

Also, consider a walking tour. Jon Sharp%26#39;s tour is highly recommended on the forums:

If you haven%26#39;t read it already, please read my trip report entitled ';quick visit';.

There is really only one way to get to Beaufort from Charleston - it couldn%26#39;t be easier. Take Hwy 17 south and turn left onto highway 21. Take Business 21 to the ';Historic District'; (there are many signs).

A tour is the best way to see the whole town. We did the following, all after leaving Charleston at 10:15 am and getting back to Charleston around 5:30pm: Shopping on Bay Street, Having a long lunch at Sea Island Gourmet, which was delicious, shopping again, taking the downtown carriage tour, and stopping at a chocolate shop (wonderful!) and for coffee.

Next time I%26#39;ll take a walking tour and spend more time shopping! ENJOY!

We enjoy just strolling around looking at all the beautiful homes. If you want to learn more about the area, take a walking or carriage ride tour. Tour guides are extremely knowledgable...at least the ones we have been fortunate enough to have.
