Where to go? (Beach vacation NC or SC)

We are planning a women%26#39;s getaway with some of the women in my family. We range in age from 70 plus to 2 years old. About 6 adults and the toddler.

We are looking to do a beach getaway this summer. We are wanting something no more that 5 hours from Charlotte, NC, a nice clean beach that is not overcrowded, good places to eat and shop yet not too much congestion but we don%26#39;t want to drive far.

We also want someplace that is not going to be too expensive. Less than $3000/wk

Suggestions?!?!

Hi, imblessed.

Good to see you on the SC forum!

One consideration would be when during the summer to you want to vacation? Highest rental rates will be mid-June through mid-August. Avoid July, especially weeks around July 4th. The beaches are packed with people, and the rental rates are at their absolute highest.

If you can travel in May, or early in June, you will get excellent weather and lower rates. At those periods you can easily find something nice within your budget. Although rates do down again in August, the end of August can be extremely hot, and there is always the risk of a hurricane. September is sometimes wonderful; other times it can be hot, humid, and - of course - there is still the risk of hurricanes.

Are you set on a hotel, or would you like to rent a condo or cottage that would accommodate all of you? Villa rentals are excellent with a toddler, because you can spread out, and you don%26#39;t have to go to a restaurant for every meal.

Hi imblessed September is also a good month for Myrtle beach. especially if you stay in Surfside or Garden City. Great shopping at Tanger Outlets. Plenty of activity good food wonderful people and some good laugh%26#39;s on the pier at Garden City. The ocean is warm and most place%26#39;s have pools too! I could go on but you can see I love this place and September is my favorite time!!!(way less crowded and more reasonable$$$$)

We have 3 teachers that will be going so June-mid August is our only options.

Right now I am open to staying in hotels/homes/condos/villas...I do want a kitchen of some sort as there is no way I am dragging my 2 year old out for each meal. And I would prefer that we all be able to stay in the same place.

A nice pool (with a kiddie area/splash park pool) would be nice too.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Definitely go in June, if you can.

All of the SC beach areas have lots of condos and cottages for rent. These places have full kitchens and are completely furnished. Will all of you stay together in a large place? or would you rent adjacent, smaller places?

If you prefer a beach area with lots of tourist activities, consider the Myrtle Beach area. If you want to be very close to Charleston, consider Isle of Palms, Sullivan%26#39;s Island, or Folly Beach. If you want quiet and nature, but close to conveniences, consider Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island.

Get an idea of the sorts of rentals available at the beaches by looking at the SC and NC listings on www.vrbo.com. Let us know what you think.

You should have no problem finding a villa or home in your price range but I%26#39;d get busy. This is prime renting season for summer weeks.

KiawahVilla is correct about the July 4th week. On Seabrook Island this is the week most owners visit, thus their homes are not available for rent (there are no hotels or high-rise buildings on SI).

Do give serious thought to HOW you want to vacation. Are you looking to escape the rat race? If so, Kiawah and Seabrook Island are probably better choices. Do you need constant stimulation i.e. people, shopping, tons of restaurants? If the answer is yes, then Sullivans, Folly, IOP, or Myrtle Beach would be what you should consider.

Personally if I%26#39;d just finished up a year of teaching I would not choose IOP or Myrtle. But then again, when I%26#39;m vacation I don%26#39;t want to see or do anything. My biggest decision is what are we cooking for dinner;-)
