Trip Report: Folly, Family, Food, Felines, & one Booty Band

We arrived at Folly Beach late Wednesday evening, unpacked into our cute, little second row cottage, and settled in for the night. After the four hour drive from NC, I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

Thursday morning was chilly. We explored the beach for a little while, and took a short, brisk walk towards the light house. We had brunch in %26#39;downtown%26#39; Folly at the Lost Dog Cafe. Two thumbs up. Our table ordered a soft pretzel with mustard, two hotdogs, two shrimp BLT wraps, and a thai peanut wrap. We filled our hungry bellies on the outdoor porch, with an ok view, surrounded by vacationers, locals, and their pups.

Thursday afternoon, we headed to Fort Moultrie. This was my second time, and I found there was still more to learn and secret coves to explore. My grandmother (in a wheelchair) was even able to explore, and she had a ball. A very large ship (the ones that carry the freight/truck cars) came into port while we were there, and it was certainly a site to see.

We had an early dinner at Shem Creek Bar %26amp; Grille, which never disappoints. Our table ordered fried osyters (two orders - topped with horseradish and roe - yum!), she-crab soup, a few seafood pasta dishes, shrimp %26amp; grits, and a salad, and everything was very good. So it looks like I found a new Shem Creek favorite for everyone else as well.

We ended Thursday evening with a long stroll into downtown Folly and back (3+ miles round-trip), and we hit the sack early.

Friday morning started where Thursday left off with another round-trip walk into town. This is the trip where we discovered the best walk was on the one-way, since it is less traveled, and easier to keep an eye out for oncoming traffic. Half the group met us halfway at the pier for a nice brunch. Our table ordered fried okra, fried green tomatoes, crab cake salads, among other delectable dishes. This was our favorite meal in Folly, and we would return.

Friday afternoon, we headed to the Angel Oak Tree. WOW. AWESOME. There are few words to describe it. Pictures do not do it justice. You have to see it in person. There is also a very peaceful feeling all around the area, that you have to feel for yourself. I definitely recommend a trip.

We headed into downtown Charleston, drove around the battery, shopped up %26amp; down the Market, and then stopped at Sonic on our way back to Folly. Everyone was very hungry and tired, so Sonic fit the bill well.

Friday evening, half of our group went on a Ghost Walk with Bulldog Tours. Our guide was entertaining. We got some good pictures, and were spooked (to say the least!) by a cat in one of the graveyards. I learn something new about Charleston every time I go on a Ghost Walk, and it%26#39;s a fun time, since it%26#39;s dark, festive, and cool (temperature-wise), so I would recommend them to anyone. Back in Folly, we wound down the evening with a beer at the Saloon with the Booty Band (seriously, that was the name). It was fun.

Saturday was Folly day. We didn%26#39;t leave the island all day. Lunch was hotdogs from Bert%26#39;s. At first glance, crock-pot hotdogs may seem unappealing to some, but boy-oh-boy were they good. We were hooked. Bert%26#39;s is a little gem we discovered Friday evening (or Saturday morning) after the Booty band. We walked again, rode bikes, played basketball, spent a little time on the beach (still chilly), and played cards all afternoon on our nice screened-in porch.

Saturday evening ended with our last dinner at the pier (again!), wonderful food, and a horrible storm. My sister saw a waterspout! We made it back just in time to our cottage, and the power went out. The rains and winds were torrential. Our power stayed out until around 3am.

Sunday (today) we packed and headed into downtown Charleston for lunch at Moe%26#39;s, a quick trip to Urban Outfitters, and one last trip to Millennium Music (closing in May).

Thank you, everyone, for your input on this board. I am a regular here, and I always learn something new, which makes planning for our next trip easy and exciting. This was one of the best beach vacations I have ever had. My entire family has fallen in love with Folly Beach. We can%26#39;t wait to return.

Excellent post!

Thanks for taking the time to write it. I always amaze myself that I seldom ever go to Folly, but I%26#39;m anxious to go back and try out Bert%26#39;s and Taco Boy!

Thank you for the wonderful report. Glad that you enjoyed the Angel Oak. There aren%26#39;t many of these genuine, awe-inspiring, and FREE attractions around anymore!

We love Folly Beach, too. My son is of the opinion that we should never tell anyone of our wonderful discovery so that it doesn%26#39;t become overcrowded...I think he is just kidding.

gnodule, great trip report!! We, too, love Folly - we%26#39;re gonna have to try Bert%26#39;s our next time in Charleston - and you really make me want to go back soon!

I%26#39;m happy all of you enjoyed it. We certainly had a fun time, and can%26#39;t wait to return in May!

maybe we can work out an agreement - you can stay at our house while you%26#39;re here and we can stay at yours!

;-))

sounds good. :P
