Travel to Charlston in August 2008

I just booked a week at the Wild Dunes Resort for August. Can you tell me if this is a nice, great or fun place to stay. How far is this from the Historic District? How far is this from the Airport? I know it is near the beach, but is it a nice beach for swimming? Tell me what you know about this Resort? There will be 22 people in our party and we want to see and do everything possible in one week. Thanks

The beach is beautiful. It is wonderful for swimming, and in August will be 82-84 degrees. Wild Dunes has LOTS to do - golf, kids things, walking trails, a marina, etc. etc. From the airport I%26#39;d count on 45 easy minutes. It%26#39;ll take you about 30-35 min to get to the historic district. The beach water is NOT like in Destin or south Florida - we have nearby marshes and big rivers that churn the water more and make it more brown than blue but it%26#39;s very clean (not many jellyfish, usually not much seaweed) The sand is velvety and you can walk far out into the water.

The only thing I%26#39;d advise is to make sure that the people who rented you the house/rooms/whatever know that you%26#39;re there for the beach (there is an erosion issue on the island that is being addressed ';as we speak'; but it has made things inconvenient for some renters as they had to walk several hundred yards down the beach to find beach space). The erosion affects only one part of Wild Dunes but it%26#39;s worth verifying for peace of mind. The city approved funding for beach renourishment but have yet to start the process. If you let us know where the property is we can tell you if you%26#39;re in the erosion zone.

As far as ';what else to do'; - I%26#39;d click on ';Things to Do'; on this page (left column) to get things started. With 22 people I imagine you%26#39;ll need a wide range of activities! It%26#39;ll be sure to be a blast. ENJOY!

The address is 5757 Palm Boulevard Isle of Palms, SC 29451. Is this area involved in the beach erosion issue?

Should be no problem!

Tell me, what is Gullah as it relates to Charleston?

The language, food and culture of many of the slaves. It can be traced to Africa and the Caribbean.

There are tours and restaurants in this area. The Penn Center at Frogmore (Hwy. 21 between Beaufort and Fripp Island) is a very good source for more information.
