fredricksburg traffic
Leave earlier or later.
If you leave M-F you should hit that area around 11am. That would also put you just after the rush hour traffic in DC.
If you leave on a Saturday, you need to get there before 9am.
Sunday probably anytime before 10-11 am.
Otherwise the little time you spend in the slow traffic would be far better than getting off and hitting those side roads with lights and local traffic. I did that once just to see how it would be and it is just better to stay on 95 and avoid the ';high volume'; traffic times.

thanks mrs. maryland, for some reason, we always hit that area at the wrong time on a saturday, this year we are travelling on a sunday, so maybe this year will be better. last year we sat for close to three hours.
Beachgirl, Fredricksburg is always my first stop traveling from NJ. We past thru around 8 AM and the traffic is no problem.
Mrs.Maryland has it 100% right . We used to hit Fredericksburg just about the same as half of the rest of the east coast hit it .Warrenton to Fredericksburg on RT17 is about 43 milees . It took us 2 and a half hours 1 year . After that we vowed never to do that again . Now we take the kids out of a school a day early and stay Friday to Friday . On the way home we leave at 3:30 am , we%26#39;re in PA before noon . The short version - leave at a different time , avoid the congestion .
good advice....just time it right...
If I have to go through there at a peak time I use 301...miserable at first but then quite delightful.
(I think 301 was the original pre-95 N-S route %26amp; is still quite scenic in stretches)
