Best directions from Mass/RI/Maine - anyone not use 95?

I read the best directions from NY and wondered does anyone not use 95? I have used 95 for three years...I usually stop in rocky mount, nc...I googled directions and found the trip to take 14 and a half hours using the NY directions, 11 and a half using 95...of course 95 is more stressful but I do usually leave at 2 am.

I just assume everyone from Mass uses 95...does anyone have any alternate routes?

People are probably afraid (rightly so in some cases) of the nightmarish traffic in NY, NJ Turnpike and DC Beltway. If you don%26#39;t time it right, watch out !

On our drive down last August, even the traffic south of Richmond was bad on a Saturday morning. If it wasn%26#39;t 18-wheelers tailgating, it was the endless rows of minvans and SUVs with ';cartop carriers'; that were secured in scary fashion.

After dodging a smashed carrier full of spewed beach attire in the road, we ended up getting off South of Wilson NC for a very relaxing drive down to Rte 40, then south on 17 to Myrtle Beach. Also saved us 30 minutes !

I agree with AA County. Whether you stay on 95 depends on what time you will be in the NYC area and what time in the Baltimore/Washington area. After really getting stuck in NYC at what should have been OK times, we take the Tappan Zee route you%26#39;ve likely read about. If our timing is OK, we go ahead and brave 95 and the beltway for Baltimore/Washington, but have sometimes gotten very bogged down in heavy traffic or stopped traffic because of accidents. There sure seem to be a lot of accidents in that area, including for quite a few miles into Virginia. So we have sometimes taken the western route around and jumped back onto 95 once you%26#39;re past all that.

By the way, we go to MB from Maine annually from Maine and have many Boston relatives doing the same who sometimes drive. A couple of the ones who are generally real road warriors won%26#39;t drive it anymore because of Baltimore/Washington.

If you haven%26#39;t seen them yet, search on this forum for directions from the New England states and NY. There are loads of posts.
