Charlestonisms I have wondered about

what is a bicycle taxi? what is a she crab? going to Charleston next month and have been perusing this forum for weeks and have noticed these(and others!) and don%26#39;t know exactly what either are. Can someone tell me? :)

A bicycle taxi is similar to a rickshaw...college students (mostly) will cart you around town while they peddle their hearts out. While it is fun, do not rely on them for a tour guide. In Charleston, out tour guides go through a very lengthy process to be licensed.

She crab soup is a definitely must try while here. It is a cream based soup with crab and a dash of sherry. Personal favorite places for she-crab are Hank%26#39;s, 82 Queen and Poogan%26#39;s Porch.

Enjoy your visit!!

...and it%26#39;s called ';she-crab'; because traditionally it was made with female crabs (which presumably taste sweeter) and some roe from the crabs. According to Southern Living mag, the roe isn%26#39;t used much anymore since it%26#39;s not ecologically ';correct';. And 82 Queen makes great she-crab soup too!

You%26#39;ll see it called ';he-crab'; soup at some places to indicate the lack of crab roe. Pinckney Street Kitchen (McClellanville) and Sewee Restaurant (Awendaw) have some of the best in the lowcountry.

You must have a bowl of She Crab soup in Charleston. It is absolutely the best!
