Hello everyone! My husband and I are visiting Charleston in mid-April.Looking forward to Southern hospitality!! First for both of us. Staying at HI historic district- hope it is as nice as people say. We don%26#39;t plan to rent a car, but are thinking maybe we should, esp to visit the plantations, and possibly a drive to Savannah if we have time, We will be in Charleston Mon to Fri- any tips, any must-dos? thanks :)
Charleston mid AprilYou%26#39;ll be over run with choices. It%26#39;s hard to suggest things out of the blue not knowing someone. Some like the gardens and homes, some like the battery, some like the food and restaurants, some like to shop, some like the military stuff at Patriot%26#39;s Point, some like the plantations, some like the beaches...well, you get the picture.
Go by the Visitor%26#39;s Center and you%26#39;ll find everything you need.
What do you like to do ( and what do you NOT like to do)? That might help with more accurate suggestions.
Best wishes - April is a great time to be in Charleston.
Charleston mid AprilThere is so much to see and do in Charleston in April! Like bud41 recommended, give us an idea of what your interest are and I know you%26#39;ll get lots of suggestions.
Examples: are you history buffs?; shoppers?; beach folks?; foodies?; or prefer ';off-the-beaten trail'; excursions?
Hello again. well, we%26#39;re not ';foodies';, and not beach people- but yes to all the rest!! thanks for your input.
Has the others have said there%26#39;s so much to see in Charleston. We love just wandering around the historic areas look at the homes and gardens. The plantations are are also a great site to see. If you are into gardening like my wife you will want to make a trip to the Angel Oak. If you have never been to Savannah by all means rent a car and make a day trip. Savannah%26#39;s riverfront and Squares are something no one should miss.
You will love the HI Historic District - best friend just returned from there (last week) and she said it was fantastic!! They walked everywhere downtown, but did have a car to go out and visit in Mt. Pleasant at Patriot%26#39;s Point, the beaches, and the Angel Tree. We%26#39;ve been to Charleston twice in mid-April - the weather was great - not too hot, and not too cold! I would suggest doing a carriage-ride tour (we love Old South!), a ghost tour at night, a plantation tour, walking along the Battery, a trip out to the beaches and the Angel Tree, a harbor tour, and if you or your hubby enjoy it, a tour of the Yorktown in Patriot%26#39;s Point. And be sure not to miss a trip through the French Market, and all of the great shopping in the boutiques and shops downtown! Hope you have a great time!
I would definately go to the visitor%26#39;s center and get a guide book and map (free). In my opinion, absolute ';must do%26#39;s'; are a carriage ride (it%26#39;s good to do that at the beginning of your vacation, it%26#39;s a good way to get a feel for the wonderful city), tour Calhoun Mansion on meeting street ($15) - well worth it, best historic home in Charleston by far!, and, of course, an evening ghost tour. And yes, the historic district is as nice as everyone says - you%26#39;ll love it! Have a great time.
The Visitor%26#39;s Center is a great place for lots of hands on stuff. However, if you%26#39;re like me, waiting to get to the city is sometimes too late to start planning, so that%26#39;s why TripAdvisor is so great.
I%26#39;d start with a great map - the one at this site http://www.resortmaps.com/view-our-maps.php# and click on View Our Maps and SC and Charleston - print these out (be sure to print out both sides) and then mark everything that looks interesting to you. Most sites are already there, but some restaurants and travel secrets you%26#39;ll have to mark yourself.
Then - have you read the ';Things To Do'; section and ';Restaurant'; links (left column of this page)? You can mark your map. Enjoy! Half the fun is planning!
Oh thanks to everyone SO much for all your wonderful tips. Can%26#39;t wait till April 21st!
